We really enjoyed this old school Italian joint. Great food and really really good wine list. The service is excellent. They really take care of you here.
You literally pay for EVERYTHING. Meals do not come with any sort of side item, salads are expensive, the food wasn't that great. You definitely pay for the name, not the food. Skip this joint and go to Cunnetos if you want great Italian.
This review is way overdue. It's actually been a couple of years since my visit, but just thinking about my experience here after a bad day made me come back to give them some well-deserved praise.Spaghetti and meatballs is the quintessential Italian-American dish, and Charlie Gitto's is a firmly traditional Italian-American restaurant. I've had a lot of good pasta, but I've never had better spaghetti and meatballs.I shared my praise with the manager, and he took me on a tour of the kitchen. He bragged about how clean they worked, and it really was the cleanest kitchen I've ever seen. They make everything in house, including the pasta, which is made for all their locations in the back room of their place on The Hill. They cook the sauce for 24 hours in a steam kettle. Their meatballs are so perfect they should be the international standard. It was a huge bowl of pasta, love, and deliciousness, and it was still under $20.It looks like they may have tweaked the menu a bit since my visit, but everything we ordered here was great. But I'll be talking about that bowl of spaghetti and meatballs for the rest of my life; I might find its equal, but I'll never find a better executed version. I'll gladly go a couple of hours out of my way any time I'm travelling through the area, just to pay them a visit.
My fiance & I went to Charlie Gitto's on the Hill last night. We had heard tremendous reviews about this place. That is by far the biggest joke I've heard in a very long time. When we arrived around 7:15 pm, we sat at the bar to wait for our table. While at the bar we had horrible service from an even worse bartender, Joe. He was very rude when I asked about the beers on tap. After we got our drinks he asked the couple next to us if they liked their drinks. They didn't respond due to the fact they were in the middle of a conversation. Joe knocked on the bar in front of them & asked the question again. When we finally got our table the service got worse. Daniel, our waiter, came by & gave us a wine menu then walked away. When he returned he told us about the specials then started to walk away again. My fiance stopped him & asked if we could order appetizers. So we ordered them & he brought them out then walked away. He never asked for our order. Then he waited on 3 tables that came in after us. Took drink orders & food orders. Never came back to us. We felt like we were being judged because we weren't in suit & tie or dress. We paid for the appetizers then left. Told the hostess about the bad service & only got a smile &"have a good night" in return. I will never go back there again.
The atmosphere is very old world Italian with dark waiscotting and low light. The wait staff is attentive and knowledgeable. The food is amazing - every bite of my seafood risotto was more seafood than risotto, creamy and rich with a hint of spice, and the eggplant parmigiano was cooked to perfection, not heavy, and a huge portion. Extensive wine list. Would definitely visit again.
