I found it clean and safe when I used it. Just be aware that you might get turned around when you get to street level and are looking to head to the arch.

This is one of the best subway stations Ive been to. The gateway arch is a couple of blocks away from here!
This is one of the best designed Metro stations in the system, using an existing railroad tunnel going through downtown. Escalators and elevators are on both the eastbound and westbound trains. Indirect lighting and sculpted stone walls accent the utilitarian arched concrete ceiling. The only issue is water puddles at the south entrance during heavy rains.
Clean, easy to navigate. Close proximity to downtown locations such as the Arch
