Nice little museum. Dressed for the Christmas season now. Very nice.
It is a cool little museum, but they charge for a guided tour which they force you to take and even if you decline multiple times you still have to pay $10-15 a person for a five room museum.
Just spent a delightful morning touring the Eugene Fields House and loved every minute. The guided part of the tour was wonderful and it is very apparent the research and great care that has gone into this marvelous museum. The furnishings just gorgeous and many of them original to the home and Fields family. The quilt exhibit from the 1800's was amazing. It is well worth your time to visit this historic home, Learn abaut Eugene Fields and his family and meet the staff who are warm, welcoming, and well informed. Wonderful experience and I plan on taking my grandchildren there next visit.
Among the numerous historic homes in town, this is unremarkable by comparison. The third floor was was under repair so fully 1/3 of the home is unavailable. The home is attached to a toy museum, as Mr. Field was a noted collector -- and even this collection is modest and not outstanding. The fee was excessive for the tour. In brief, other historic St. Louis homes are much better maintained or have better collections.
Lived in Metro STL my whole life and I finally went to the Field house. I love history, architecture, and musems. The house is the childhood home of Eugene Field's. The house is 150 years old and it has been a museum and maintained since the 1930s. Field's father was the lawyer who defended Dred Scott in the famous Dred Scott slavery trial.
